Intraosseus access or the administration of medications and fluids via the bone is becoming a trend not only in the emergency department but also in non-acute care areas. Since intraosseus access is now becoming an alternative route of administration in place of an IV line, emergency medicine providers should be aware of this procedure, how it’s done, the indications, contraindications as well as the considerations for patients with an IO access in place.
