In episode 42 of Meet the Scientist, Carl Zimmer speaks with Julian Davies, professor emeritus in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at the University of British Columbia and leading expert on antibiotics.
Zimmer talks with Davies about the impact the discovery of antibiotics has had on the course of modern medicine, and the growing threat from the evolution of antibiotic-resistant bacteria we face today.
While most of us think of antibiotics as a way to kill microbes. Davies points out that microbes make antibiotics naturally, and for them, these molecules may not be lethal weapons. They may actually be a way to talk to other microbes.
