The Nursing Show
A large percentage of newborn infants present with a yellowish discoloration of the skin in the first days of life. Physiologic jaundice is normal and is a result of the newborn liver's lack of capacity to remove the bilirubin from the blood. Phototherapy and increased feeding will aid in the excretion of this substance. In some cases however, jaundice is a result of an underlying disorder or disease and if not treated, biliruin will move into the brain and cause serious complications.
