School Psychology Podcast Episode 033: Climate Control in the Classroom Continued

Climate control in the Classroom returns as a regular segment on the school psychology podcast. In this installment, the correct balance of attention and praise to optimize the classroom climate is discussed.

Negative tone and criticism, punishment and removing a student from class can all lead to a poor classroom climate for learning, risk-taking and collaboration. Use of praise and positive feedback at a higher rate than reprimands has been proven to be effective by numerous studies.

Another climate killing approach is to give too little feedback. Paying too little attention and giving too little correction and guidance can also create a poor learning environment.

Finding the right balance and using empirically proven approaches to encourage learning and positive behavior are discussed further in the podcast.
