Parents and schools need to collaborate for the benefit of students. In this School Psychology podcast episode, Dr. Weisz highlights Kimberli Breen’s Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports presentation on the importance of school family collaboration at the NYS PBIS conference in Syracuse. Kim points out that research shows great benefits when families and schools collaborate in the following areas:
1. Communication between children and teachers
2. Student self-esteem
3. Education level and skills
4. Decision-making skills
5. Family attitudes toward school and school personnel
6. Student school attendance
7. Grades and graduation rates
8. Motivation
In addition, the following areas drop when families and schools partner:
1. School suspensions due to misconduct
2. Drug and alcohol use
3. Violent behavior
Other important points made are that the more children are kept in the classroom, the better their learning outcomes, while there is great educational danger to moving children out of the classroom for disciplinary reasons.
