Fascinating Human Research in a Virtual World

Avatars can display over 100 emotes Image via Wikipedia

Ever since Second Life and There.com have been around I think we've all been waiting to see these worlds put to a more interesting educational use than simply holding classes in these virtual worlds.  Recently, researchers have begun to do so very interesting research to see if people behave through their avatars in ways that are similar to how they themselves behave in the real world.  Here's a very interesting interview with one of these researchers who went into There.com to see if the well-established strategies that sales people often use, called the "Foot-In-The-Door" and "Door-In-The-Face"  techniques might also work in this virtual world.  A very interesting interview on this topic in episode 74 of The Psych Files podcast.
