Does Sarah Palin running for Vice President help children with special needs?

I begin to examine this issue this week in my blog and will devote much of my next podcast on it as well. Much of special education policy and laws are based on a combination of the spirit of hard-working, dedicated parents of children with special needs along with sound legislation focusing on what research proves to be worthwhile in terms of interventions, supports and protections. There is a half century of laws that have built up the structure of special education. Palin's claim to be a friend to parents of children with special needs, without explaining what she thinks would be helpful in advocating for these children, other than electing a mother of a child with Down's Syndrome is rather amorphous. Or is that simply enough, in her mind? There are many parents of children with disabilities who are pleased and feel supported by this alone. I argue though that more is needed. It's a slap in the face to the heroic parents who worked tirelessly toward improving the outcomes of children in the school systems and in life by pushing for policies and laws that provide support, excellent education and legal protections for so many children and their families, including Trig and his family.
